UNESCO World Heritage, Identity,
& Economic Development



Today, cultural and natural heritage is a global, multi-billion-dollar industry. Designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site confers national prestige and promotes tourism development. These sites are places for cultural encounters, exchanges, and conflicts among various stakeholders such as local communities, domestic and foreign tourists, NGOs, local and national government, international agencies and many others. Across Southeast Asia, World Heritage Sites are shaped by diverging interpretations and appropriations that in turn influence local and national identities. While these sites hold considerable potential for economic development, diverging interests can lead to conflicting approaches and agendas. Thus, many questions arise:

• How are World Heritage Sites interpreted?
• How can they contribute to economic development?
• What are some of the examples of best practices in managing these heritage sites?

These and other heritage-related topics will be discussed by Professor Emeritus Victor King in a lecture, followed by a round table panel with notable cultural heritage experts and researchers, government officials, and members of the academe. An open forum will conclude the event. As we celebrate the 46th founding anniversary of ASEAN, this forum is part of the Cultural Heritage Studies Program of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (DSA), Institute of Philippine Culture, the Southeast Asia Program of the School of Social Sciences, and the Internationalization Program of the Ateneo de Manila University.
